Watering the area for the new bed

STEP 2: Add the first layer. Using the previous fall’s leaf litter, cover the prepared area to a thickness of about 2 inches (5 cm). Blewits are aggressive, so sterilizing the substrate isn’t necessary, and they’ll make short work of any bacteria left in the leaves. Any leaves will work, but if you use pine needles, mix them with the leaves of other trees.

STEP 3: Add the spawn. Add one bag of blewit spawn to the leaf litter. Stir it around, breaking up all the chunks. Try to make as much contact between the spawn and substrate as possible. The more contact, the faster the spawn will colonize the leaves.

STEP 4: Add the second layer. Cover the spawn layer with another layer of leaves. This one should be about as thick as the first, but it can be thicker if you’d like. Gently stir this layer into the layer beneath it. This will ensure the top layer gets colonized as well.

STEP 5: Incubation time. Give the bed a good watering. Don’t oversoak it and drown the mycelium, but give it enough water so that the leaves stick together. Then cover the bed with a plastic sheet, weighting it down, and leave it there for about two months. Once again, clear or white plastic is preferred.
